Japan Grants Special Entry Exception to North Korean Football Team for Asian Games

Japan has granted a special entry exception allowing North Korea’s men’s football team to enter the country for the Asian Games, while maintaining its broader restrictions on the entry of North Korean nationals.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara explained that the decision was based on what the government considered special circumstances and previous cases in which similar exceptions had been made.

The move allows the North Korean football delegation to participate in the international sporting event despite Japan’s continuing restrictions connected with its sanctions policy toward North Korea.

Japanese authorities emphasized that the exceptional admission does not represent a general change in the country’s existing entry restrictions. The government continues to maintain its wider policy regarding the entry of North Korean nationals.
