New York: Actors Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder were among demonstrators detained by New York police during a protest outside the United Nations headquarters as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prepared to address the UN General Assembly.

The demonstration brought together around 200 protesters near the UN complex in Manhattan. Organised by Jewish Voice for Peace, the protest focused on opposition to Netanyahu’s visit and US military support for Israel.

Sarandon and Einbinder were among several public figures taken into custody during the demonstration. New York City Council member Chi Ossé and congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier were also among those detained.

Protesters gathered wearing matching white shirts carrying messages including calls to fund humanitarian needs rather than weapons. Demonstrators also called for an end to the war in Gaza.

Police moved against protesters after portions of the demonstration blocked traffic near First Avenue. Officers instructed the group to leave the roadway. Those who remained seated were subsequently taken into custody.

Reports published on September 25 gave differing totals for the number of people detained. Al Jazeera, citing Reuters and the Associated Press, reported about 100 arrests, while an earlier Reuters account reported at least 30 arrests.

The arrests took place as Netanyahu was scheduled to speak before the UN General Assembly. His appearance itself was accompanied by significant political controversy, with dozens of international delegates leaving the chamber as he began his address.

Sarandon, an Academy Award-winning actor, has publicly expressed opposition to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. Einbinder, known for her role in the television series Hacks, has also previously spoken publicly about the conflict.

The presence of prominent entertainers at the demonstration attracted additional international attention to the protest. However, the organisers emphasized that their campaign was focused on the broader political and humanitarian issues surrounding the Gaza conflict rather than the involvement of individual celebrities.

New York police maintained a significant security presence around the United Nations during Netanyahu’s visit. The area experienced multiple demonstrations involving supporters and opponents of Israel’s government.

The arrests highlighted the intense political debate surrounding Netanyahu’s international appearances and the continuing controversy over the Gaza conflict.

Inside the UN, Netanyahu defended Israel’s actions and addressed criticism from foreign governments and international organisations. Outside the building, protesters continued to demand changes in US policy toward Israel and an end to the fighting.
