New Delhi | June 17, 2025 — The Delhi Police has issued a crucial warning to residents about a rising wave of cyber fraud that is exploiting fear and urgency to steal personal and financial information. At the heart of this scam is a deceptive message that reads: “Your water connection will be disconnected tonight.”

What may appear as an ordinary utility notice is actually a trap. Scammers are leveraging this tactic to create panic, urging unsuspecting individuals to click on malicious links or download fraudulent apps. Once the user complies, their banking details are compromised in mere seconds.

According to the police, the fraud typically unfolds in a few quick steps:

A user receives a text or WhatsApp message claiming their water connection will be cut off unless immediate action is taken.

The message often cites the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to appear legitimate and includes details like KNO number or meter ID to build credibility.

A fake representative may then contact the victim, requesting them to download a small app or make a small payment — sometimes as low as ₹10–₹20 — to resolve the issue.

In reality, this payment gateway is a front, and once accessed, the victim’s entire bank account is emptied.

Delhi Police’s message is simple but powerful: “Don’t click. Don’t panic.” This isn’t a case of an unpaid bill — it’s a carefully designed cyber scam.

Authorities are urging citizens to:

Avoid clicking on links from unknown senders.

Verify such claims directly through official DJB contacts or websites.

Refrain from downloading any third-party apps based on such messages.

Report suspicious activity to cybercrime helplines immediately.

This scam is yet another example of how fraudsters are evolving, using emotional manipulation and urgency to bypass logic and gain access to private data. The Delhi Police has emphasized the importance of digital vigilance in an age where a single click can have irreversible consequences
