Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Launches Advanced Battlefield Surveillance System ‘SANJAY’

On January 24, 2025, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the cutting-edge ‘SANJAY – The Battlefield Surveillance System’ at South Block, New Delhi. This state-of-the-art system integrates data from various ground and aerial sensors to create a unified and real-time Common Surveillance Picture of the battlefield. The system is designed to improve operational efficiency and transparency, enhancing the Indian Army’s ability to respond effectively in both conventional and unconventional scenarios.
Indigenously developed in collaboration with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), SANJAY represents a significant step toward achieving self-reliance in defence technology under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. The system uses advanced analytics and secure communication networks to monitor borders, detect intrusions, and deliver precise intelligence for decision-making.
Scheduled for deployment across operational brigades, divisions, and corps in three phases from March to October 2025, the project has been developed under the ‘Buy (Indian)’ category at a cost of ₹2,402 crore. This initiative also aligns with the Ministry of Defence’s ‘Year of Reforms,’ focusing on modernization and innovation.
The launch event was attended by senior officials, including Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, and BEL Chairman Manoj Jain, marking a pivotal moment in India’s defence modernization efforts.
