Taipei, June 4, 2025 — Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense has disclosed that it observed increased Chinese military activity close to its territory early Wednesday. According to official updates, two formations of Chinese military aircraft and 12 naval vessels from the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) were tracked near Taiwan’s surrounding air and maritime zones by 6 a.m. local time.

Taiwanese defense surveillance recorded that both aircraft formations flew beyond the unofficial central divide of the Taiwan Strait, a line generally acknowledged to help maintain distance between Taiwan and mainland China. The aircraft then moved into the island’s northern and eastern air surveillance zones.

In an official post on X, Taiwan’s defense ministry stated, “Our monitoring systems identified the presence of two Chinese aircraft groups and several naval ships operating near Taiwan’s defense zones. The aircraft crossed into sensitive sectors monitored by our air defense systems. All developments were tracked in real-time, and countermeasures were put in place where necessary.”

Though the central waterway between Taiwan and China has no formal demarcation recognized under international law, both sides have traditionally treated it as a zone to avoid direct military encounters. Incidents where this informal understanding is disregarded are seen by Taipei as escalations and strategic messaging by Beijing.

China has not issued any direct comment regarding this latest development. However, regional observers note a pattern of increasing Chinese military maneuvers in the vicinity of Taiwan over recent years. These actions are widely interpreted as efforts to challenge Taiwan’s defensive boundaries and signal pressure over its self-governed status.

The Taiwanese government emphasized that all necessary precautions were taken, and its armed forces remain on heightened alert to protect national sovereignty and regional security.
