Taiwan Monitors Surge in Chinese Military Activity Amid Rising Regional Strain
Taipei, June 29, 2025 – Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) has reported a marked uptick in Chinese military operations near its air and maritime borders, signaling a renewed phase of tension in the Taiwan Strait. In an early morning update at 6:00 AM local time (UTC+8), officials confirmed the detection of eight sorties by China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft along with seven naval vessels from the PLA Navy operating in the vicinity of Taiwan.
The update, shared via the MND’s official account on X (formerly Twitter), assured that Taiwan’s armed forces were actively tracking the movements and had taken “appropriate countermeasures” to safeguard its airspace and waters. This latest development follows a smaller military presence recorded just one day earlier, involving four PLA aircraft sorties.
Taiwan views these continued maneuvers as part of a broader pattern of pressure from Beijing, which has never renounced its claim over the island, despite Taiwan operating as a sovereign democracy with its own government, military, and international ties. The growing frequency and scale of PLA activity are widely interpreted as efforts to test Taiwan’s readiness and intimidate its leadership, while sending a geopolitical message to the global community.
Defense experts note that these drills serve strategic purposes beyond mere showmanship.
