Denmark takes the helm at a time when the European Union faces significant global and regional challenges—from geopolitical tensions and energy transitions to economic resilience and democratic governance. In response, Denmark has highlighted key focus areas for its presidency:

Strengthening security and unity across the EU,

Driving the green and digital transformation,

Boosting European industrial and technological competitiveness,

Reinforcing the rule of law and democratic institutions.

Von der Leyen’s emphasis on “Danish pragmatism” reflects the EU’s confidence in Denmark’s ability to approach complex negotiations with practicality and balance—essential traits for mediating between diverse member state interests.

As President of the Council, Denmark will chair meetings at various levels—from technical committees to ministerial sessions—ensuring continuity in policy discussions and pushing forward the EU’s legislative priorities.

The Council’s presidency rotates among member countries every six months, providing each with the opportunity to influence the direction of EU policymaking. For Denmark, this period presents a valuable platform to shape future EU initiatives and showcase leadership on critical European issues.
