The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued a stark warning about the alarming rate at which glaciers are shrinking across the globe. According to their latest post, glaciers in nearly every region of the world have been losing mass dramatically over the past few decades, posing serious risks to ecosystems, freshwater supply, and sea level stability.

A graph shared by WMO shows the cumulative mass change of glaciers relative to 1992, indicating steep declines in glacier volume in regions like Alaska, Western Canada, Central Europe, the Andes, and the Arctic. The trend lines reveal that since the 1950s, glacier melt has accelerated, with the steepest losses occurring in recent decades. This data underscores the irreversible impacts of global warming on the cryosphere.

In response, WMO is calling for immediate and unified #ClimateAction. They are urging the global community to support the “International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation” campaign and join hands to safeguard what remains of the planet’s critical ice reserves. Their initiative emphasizes not only environmental preservation but also the protection of communities that depend on glaciers for water, agriculture, and disaster resilience.

“Glaciers are disappearing before our eyes,” the WMO warns, pointing to a future where water scarcity and sea-level rise could destabilize millions of lives if bold action is not taken. The organization encourages the public and governments to visit un-glaciers.org/en and become part of the global commitment to reverse climate damage and preserve glacier ecosystems.

With the hashtag #Glaciers2025, the campaign seeks to raise awareness and drive political momentum. The science is clear—the time to act is now, before the world’s glaciers become a story of the past.
