Giorgia Meloni Responds to Tribunal Ruling in Almasri Case: Defends Government Unity and Actions

Rome, August 2025 — Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has issued a firm and pointed response after receiving formal notification from the Tribunal of Ministers regarding the controversial Almasri case. More than six months after the investigation began—well beyond the three-month legal timeframe—Meloni noted that the process was marred by premature leaks and irregularities.
The tribunal has officially dismissed Meloni’s personal involvement, but its ruling indicates that the Ministers of the Interior and Justice—Matteo Piantedosi and Carlo Nordio—along with Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano, may soon face a formal request for authorization to proceed with prosecution.
The decree states that Meloni had not been informed in advance of the decision in question and had not participated in or supported the alleged misconduct. It argues that she did not “reinforce the criminal plan.” However, Meloni strongly rejects this interpretation, calling it “clearly absurd.”
“It is unthinkable that three senior members of the government, including my delegate for intelligence, would act without my knowledge on such a serious matter,” she stated, insisting that her government functions under collective leadership and shared accountability.
Unlike some of her predecessors, Meloni emphasized her refusal to distance herself from her ministers in times of political pressure. “Every important decision is made together,” she affirmed, reiterating that the government acted lawfully and in defense of national security.
She further stated that she would join her colleagues—Piantedosi, Nordio, and Mantovano—in Parliament during the vote on whether to grant authorization to proceed, standing by their actions and leadership.
“The guiding principle of this government remains the safety of the Italian people,” Meloni concluded, doubling down on her commitment to defend the decisions made collectively by her administration.
