Zelenskyy Visits Ukrainian Troops in Vovchansk, Addresses Foreign Mercenary Threats

Vovchansk, Ukraine – August 2025
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited soldiers stationed in the Vovchansk direction, reaffirming his commitment to those defending Ukraine at one of the war’s most active frontlines. The troops belong to the 17th Separate Motorized Infantry Battalion, part of the 57th Brigade named after the historic Cossack leader Kost Hordiienko.
During his visit, President Zelenskyy met with commanders to review current battlefield conditions, defensive efforts around Vovchansk, and recent developments in the ongoing conflict. Key topics included drone logistics, recruitment challenges, and ensuring direct financial support to front-line units.
A serious concern raised by Ukrainian forces was the observed presence of foreign fighters engaged on the battlefield. Reports from the unit indicate the involvement of mercenaries from China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, and African nations. President Zelenskyy emphasized that such developments would not go unanswered and that Ukraine would respond with resolve.
> “We will react to these threats. Our defenders are not only protecting Ukraine but standing against aggression on behalf of all who value freedom,” he stated.
To honor the service and sacrifice of the soldiers, Zelenskyy awarded state honors to several members of the battalion. His visit was both symbolic and strategic, reinforcing national unity and the importance of direct engagement with active-duty forces.
> “Thank you for your courage, your service to our nation, and your loyalty to one another,” Zelenskyy told the troops.
The visit sent a powerful message: Ukraine’s leadership stands shoulder to shoulder with its defenders—prepared to adapt, endure, and confront new threats together.
