Paris, August 2025

Marking five years since the catastrophic Beirut port explosion, French President Emmanuel Macron issued a heartfelt statement expressing solidarity with the people of Lebanon and honoring the memory of those lost in one of the most devastating incidents in the country’s modern history.

“Five years ago, the explosion in Beirut tore through the heart of Lebanon and shocked the entire world,” Macron said, recalling the horror that unfolded on August 4, 2020, when a massive blast at the port killed over 200 people, injured thousands, and left the capital city in ruins.

Macron emphasized that the tragedy remains vivid in France’s collective memory and in his own personal reflections. He recalled his visit to Beirut just two days after the explosion, on August 6, 2020, during which he met victims, rescue workers, and Lebanese officials. That day, Macron pledged support not just in words but through action.

“We will never forget the victims, nor the suffering of a nation we hold dear,” he said. “In hardship and in hope, France stands—and will always stand—by Lebanon.”

Macron reaffirmed France’s unwavering support for Lebanon’s reconstruction, sovereignty, and long-term security. Over the past five years, France has been actively involved in humanitarian assistance, infrastructure restoration, and advocating for political reform and accountability in Lebanon.

His message was not only a tribute but also a reminder that international solidarity must remain consistent, especially when a nation faces ongoing political and economic challenges.

As Lebanon continues to recover, Macron’s words signal a continued partnership rooted in history, shared values, and a vision for a stable, independent Lebanese future.

“France’s commitment to Lebanon is enduring and unconditional,” Macron concluded.
