Rome, August 7, 2025 — Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has extended her sincere condolences to the people of Ghana following a tragic helicopter accident that claimed the lives of multiple Ghanaian officials, including two senior ministers.

In an official statement, Meloni expressed sorrow over the deaths of Ghana’s Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Minister of Environment, Science and Technology Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed. She shared her sympathies on behalf of both herself and the Italian government.

“I offer my heartfelt condolences to the Republic of Ghana and the families of all those who lost their lives in this devastating helicopter crash,” Meloni said. “Our thoughts are with the nation of Ghana in this time of profound loss.”

The incident occurred earlier today while the officials were reportedly on a government mission. Preliminary information suggests the aircraft went down due to poor weather conditions, but a detailed investigation is underway to uncover the precise circumstances.

The sudden deaths of these key ministers have sent shock and grief throughout Ghana. President Nana Akufo-Addo is expected to address the country shortly, and the government has already initiated national mourning procedures.

Edward Omane Boamah was widely respected for his contributions to national security, while Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed was known for his commitment to sustainable progress and scientific innovation.

Messages of support have begun arriving from international leaders, including those from African and European nations. Italy, in particular, emphasized its solidarity with Ghana during this difficult time.

Diplomatic sources confirmed that a formal condolence message will also be delivered through the Italian Embassy in Accra in the coming days.
