Paris, August 7, 2025 — French President Emmanuel Macron has spoken out firmly following the violent assault of Gilles Dussault, the mayor of Villeneuve-de-Marc, and his son. The attack, which took place in southeastern France, has sparked outrage and renewed calls for the protection of elected officials across the country.

In a statement posted on social media, President Macron expressed solidarity with the victims and sent his thoughts to the Dussault family. “When an elected official is attacked, it is the entire Nation that stands with them,” Macron declared. “My thoughts are with Gilles Dussault and his son, who were violently assaulted.”

According to early reports, both the mayor and his son were physically attacked by an unknown individual under circumstances that are still under investigation. While their injuries are reportedly non-life-threatening, the incident has been described by officials as deeply troubling and symbolic of rising aggression toward public servants.

President Macron emphasized that an attack on a representative of the Republic is an attack on the Republic itself. “When someone targets our elected officials, the Republic must respond with firmness and resolve,” he said. “Every effort is being made to identify and bring the perpetrator of this cowardly act to justice.”

French authorities have launched a full investigation, and national police are actively pursuing leads. The Interior Ministry has also reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of mayors and local officials, many of whom have faced increasing threats in recent years.

This latest incident has reignited a national conversation about the respect and security of France’s democratic institutions and those who serve them at the local level.
