Pelosi Marks 90 Years of Social Security, Criticizes Trump’s Cuts to Services

San Francisco, August 15, 2025 – Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi joined seniors, advocates, and community leaders in San Francisco today to mark the 90th anniversary of Social Security, celebrating the program’s enduring role in protecting retirees and vulnerable Americans.
Speaking at the event, Pelosi emphasized Social Security’s legacy as a cornerstone of economic security for millions of citizens, ensuring they can retire with dignity after decades of work. She described the program as “one of America’s greatest promises” and pledged continued Democratic efforts to safeguard and strengthen it for future generations.
Pelosi also used the occasion to sharply criticize President Donald Trump’s handling of Social Security services. She accused the administration of closing field offices, firing staff, and cutting essential services, actions she said undermine the program’s accessibility and efficiency.
“Social Security is not just a government program — it’s a lifeline,” Pelosi said. “We should be expanding access and improving services, not dismantling them.”
Advocates at the gathering echoed her concerns, warning that reduced staffing and office closures could delay benefits processing and make it harder for seniors to access critical assistance.
The event concluded with calls for bipartisan commitment to preserve Social Security’s funding and ensure it keeps pace with the needs of an aging population.
