UN Chief Guterres Expresses Condolences Over Deadly Flash Floods in India and Pakistan

United Nations, August 19, 2025 — UN Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced profound sorrow over the loss of life caused by devastating flash floods that struck parts of India and Pakistan in recent days.
In a heartfelt message, Guterres extended his condolences to the families of the victims and expressed solidarity with the communities struggling in the aftermath of the disaster. “I feel deep sorrow at the lives lost due to the recent flash floods in India and Pakistan,” he said, adding that the pain of the bereaved families is shared by the international community.
The Secretary-General underscored the UN’s readiness to provide immediate assistance, noting that agencies under the UN system are prepared to coordinate relief operations if requested. “The United Nations stands ready to provide any necessary support,” Guterres affirmed.
The floods, triggered by intense monsoon rains, have caused widespread damage to infrastructure, displaced thousands of people, and disrupted essential services. Humanitarian organizations on the ground are already working to deliver food, clean water, and medical aid to those in need.
Guterres emphasized that the tragedy highlights the growing threat of extreme weather events linked to climate change, urging global leaders to accelerate efforts in disaster preparedness and resilience building.
As rescue and recovery operations continue, the UN chief reiterated his call for collective action, stating that the international community must “stand with the people of India and Pakistan during this difficult time.”
