The Secretary-General of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Kao Kim Hourn, held a meeting today with Cristina González at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta. The discussion focused on strengthening ties between ASEAN and Uruguay and exploring new avenues for economic cooperation.

During the meeting, both sides exchanged perspectives on expanding collaboration in areas such as trade, investment, and regional partnerships. A key topic of conversation was Uruguay’s interest in joining the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), one of the world’s largest free trade agreements that links major economies across the Asia-Pacific region.

The dialogue reflected Uruguay’s growing engagement with Southeast Asia and its desire to deepen economic connections with ASEAN member states. Officials highlighted that closer cooperation could create new opportunities for businesses, improve trade flows, and strengthen partnerships between Latin America and the ASEAN region.

ASEAN leaders continue to promote greater international engagement and collaboration with global partners, and the meeting signaled mutual interest in building stronger economic and diplomatic links between Southeast Asia and Uruguay in the years ahead.
