A murder suspect in Karachi died after police opened fire following an alleged attempt to escape from custody, according to police officials. The incident occurred after the suspect was arrested in connection with the killing of a shopkeeper during a robbery in the Shah Latif Town area.

Police said the suspect, identified as Rawal Sarwar, had allegedly been involved in the September 21 killing of shopkeeper Saeed Nawaz. According to the police account, Nawaz was shot while resisting a robbery in Sector 16-A near Darakshan Marriage Hall. One suspect was reportedly caught by members of the public after the incident, while two other alleged accomplices escaped from the scene.

The arrested suspect was subsequently taken into police custody and an FIR was registered against him in connection with the case.

Police said Sarwar had been injured or was feeling unwell after members of the public allegedly beat him following his capture. While he was being taken to hospital for medical treatment, authorities said the situation changed when he allegedly managed to seize a firearm belonging to a police constable.

According to Shah Latif Town police, Sarwar allegedly snatched the pistol from Constable Saleem Tanoli and opened fire. The shooting reportedly injured the police officer.

Police then said the suspect attempted to flee from custody. Officers opened fire during the alleged escape attempt, and Sarwar was critically injured.

He was taken toward Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, but police said he died while being transported to the hospital. The injured constable was also shifted to a medical facility for treatment.

The incident has added another development to the investigation into the killing of the shopkeeper. Police are continuing efforts to identify and locate the other individuals allegedly involved in the robbery.

Authorities have also claimed that Sarwar had previously been named in several criminal cases. Police described him as a habitual offender, although allegations made by law-enforcement authorities do not by themselves constitute a criminal conviction.

The circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death are based primarily on the police account that he attempted to escape after allegedly taking a police weapon. The reported sequence of events means that questions concerning the use of force and the circumstances of the custodial shooting could remain subject to further official examination.

The case highlights the risks faced by police officers while transporting suspects and dealing with individuals accused of violent offences. It also demonstrates how investigations can develop rapidly when an accused person is already in custody.

The death of a suspect before a criminal trial also means that the allegations against him cannot proceed through the normal trial process. Any remaining criminal investigation into the robbery and murder will therefore focus on the evidence against other suspected participants.

Karachi has continued to face concerns over street crime and armed robberies, making cases involving shopkeepers and other commercial workers a significant public-safety issue.

For the victims’ families, the central investigation remains the circumstances surrounding Saeed Nawaz’s death and the identification of those responsible. Police have yet to bring the remaining alleged accomplices before the courts.

The latest incident therefore represents a significant development in the Karachi robbery-murder investigation, but further investigation will be required to establish the complete circumstances surrounding both the original killing and the subsequent death of the arrested suspect.
