Namibia Stun South Africa in T20I Opener as Trumpelmann Leads Historic Win
Windhoek, August 29, 2026: Namibia produced one of the biggest early talking points of the T20I tri-series after defeating South Africa by 18 runs in the opening match at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek. The result gave Namibia a perfect start to the tournament and marked their second consecutive T20I victory over the Proteas.
Frylinck and Steenkamp Give Namibia a Flying Start
South Africa won the toss and decided to field, but Namibia’s opening pair immediately put the visitors under pressure.
Jan Frylinck and Louren Steenkamp combined for an 84-run opening partnership, providing Namibia with the platform they needed. Frylinck was particularly aggressive, scoring 60 from 38 deliveries, while Steenkamp added 41 from 29 balls.
South Africa eventually fought back through Prenelan Subrayen and captain Bjorn Fortuin. Subrayen claimed three wickets, while Fortuin took two, causing Namibia to lose wickets regularly during the middle and closing stages.
Despite that pressure, Namibia recovered sufficiently to finish on 163/9 from 20 overs.
South Africa’s Chase Starts Poorly
The Proteas needed 164 runs to win but immediately found themselves in trouble.
Namibia’s bowlers made early breakthroughs, removing both South African openers during the Powerplay. The visitors reached only 34/2 after six overs, leaving them with significant work to do in the remaining overs.
Dewald Brevis then produced a determined counterattack.
Brevis Keeps South Africa Alive
Brevis became the central figure in South Africa’s chase, scoring an impressive 75 runs from 50 balls. His aggressive innings included four fours and five sixes and temporarily gave the Proteas hope of completing the chase.
However, Namibia continued to take wickets at important moments.
The decisive breakthrough came when fast bowler Ruben Trumpelmann dismissed Brevis in the 18th over. With South Africa’s main source of momentum gone, the required run rate became increasingly difficult to manage.
South Africa eventually finished on 145/9, falling 18 runs short of the target.
Trumpelmann and Smit Complete the Job
Trumpelmann finished with 3/24, while JJ Smit also claimed three wickets. Their combined efforts prevented South Africa from producing a late surge.
Smit was named Player of the Match for his contribution to Namibia’s successful defence. The result was particularly significant because Namibia had previously defeated South Africa in their first T20I meeting, also in Windhoek.
A Major Boost for Namibian Cricket
The victory represents more than just two points in a tri-series. Namibia are preparing alongside South Africa and Zimbabwe for the 2027 ODI World Cup, which the three nations will co-host.
Defeating a higher-ranked South African side again demonstrates Namibia’s growing confidence in international T20 cricket. The hosts now have an opportunity to build momentum as the tournament continues.
South Africa, meanwhile, will need to recover quickly. Their next tri-series assignment is against Zimbabwe, giving the Proteas an immediate opportunity to respond to the unexpected defeat.
For Namibia, however, the message from Windhoek was clear: they are no longer an opponent that stronger teams can afford to underestimate.
