Subarnapur, October 31: Subarnapur district in Odisha observed National Unity Day with enthusiasm and patriotic spirit on October 31, marking the 151st birth anniversary of India’s Iron Man, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. A special walkathon, floral tribute ceremony and National Unity Pledge were organised to highlight the importance of national integration, mutual harmony, solidarity and the country’s unity and integrity.

The programme witnessed active participation from district administration officials, police personnel, school students, sports enthusiasts and members of various Self-Help Groups (SHGs). Through these activities, the district administration sought to spread the message that unity, cooperation and collective responsibility are essential for building a strong and progressive nation.
Walkathon Begins from DRDA Office
The day’s programme started in the morning with a walkathon organised under the banner of National Unity Day. Participants assembled at the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) office, from where the procession proceeded towards the District Collector’s office.
Before the walkathon commenced, officials and other dignitaries paid floral tributes to the portrait of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. They remembered his extraordinary contribution to India’s freedom movement and his historic role in bringing hundreds of princely states together after independence.
District Collector Debashish Singh and Superintendent of Police Narayan Nayak jointly flagged off the walkathon, formally inaugurating the event. Their presence reflected the coordinated efforts of the civil administration and police department in promoting national unity and public participation.
Students and Women Participate Enthusiastically
The walkathon attracted considerable participation from different sections of society. Students representing several schools across the district joined the programme and walked together to convey the importance of national unity.
More than 100 students participated in the event. Their involvement made the programme particularly significant, as young people play an important role in carrying forward the values of patriotism, constitutional responsibility and social harmony.
Participants associated with Khelo India also took part in the walkathon. Their presence highlighted the connection between sports, teamwork and national integration. Sports encourage discipline, mutual respect and cooperation, values that are equally important in strengthening society.
Women members of different Self-Help Groups also participated actively. Their involvement demonstrated the growing contribution of women to community development and public awareness initiatives. The participation of students, sportspersons and SHG members made the walkathon a collective celebration involving people from different backgrounds.
The event carried a simple but meaningful message: despite differences in language, culture, region and traditions, citizens remain connected through a shared national identity.
Senior District Officials Attend the Programme
Several senior administrative and police officials attended the National Unity Day celebration in Subarnapur.
Among the dignitaries present were Additional District Magistrate (Revenue) Rajendra Majhi, Additional District Magistrate Anjalina Pradhan, Chief Development Officer Ashwini Meher and DSP (Vigilance) Ritanjali Pradhan.

The walkathon concluded at the District Collector’s office, where the next phase of the National Unity Day programme was organised.
Public Meeting Highlights the Importance of National Integration
After the completion of the walkathon, a public meeting was held at the District Collector’s office. The gathering provided an opportunity to reflect on the significance of National Unity Day and the contributions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to the making of modern India.
National Unity Day is observed every year on October 31 to commemorate Patel’s birth anniversary. He is widely remembered for his leadership, determination and remarkable contribution to the integration of princely states following India’s independence in 1947.
His efforts played a decisive role in establishing a politically integrated country during a challenging period in Indian history. Because of this contribution, he is popularly remembered as the ‘Iron Man of India’.
The public meeting highlighted the importance of preserving the values associated with his legacy. National unity is not limited to government policies or official ceremonies; it also depends on the everyday conduct of citizens, mutual understanding and respect for different communities.
The gathering reinforced the idea that people from different social, cultural and economic backgrounds must work together for the country’s development.
National Unity Pledge Administered Across Government Offices
One of the important highlights of the celebration was the administration of the National Unity Pledge in government offices throughout Subarnapur district.
Government employees and officials participated in the pledge ceremony, reaffirming their commitment to protecting the unity, integrity and security of the nation. The pledge served as a reminder that every citizen and public servant has a responsibility to support national integration and maintain social harmony.
Such activities also encourage government employees to perform their duties with dedication and a spirit of public service.
The simultaneous observance of the pledge across government offices helped extend the message of National Unity Day beyond the main district-level programme.
Why National Unity Day Is Significant
National Unity Day holds special importance in India’s history because it honours the contribution of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who played a central role in consolidating the country after independence.
Born on October 31, 1875, Patel was one of the leading figures of India’s freedom struggle. As India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, he undertook the challenging responsibility of integrating numerous princely states into the Indian Union.
His leadership helped establish the foundations of a united nation. His life continues to inspire people through his commitment to national interest, administrative strength and public service.
The observance of National Unity Day through walkathons, public gatherings, educational activities and unity pledges provides an opportunity to communicate these historical values to younger generations.
For students, such programmes are also a way to understand that national development requires cooperation, discipline, tolerance and respect for one another.
A Collective Message of Unity from Subarnapur
The National Unity Day celebration in Subarnapur reflected the district administration’s efforts to involve different sections of society in promoting national integration.
The participation of more than 100 students, Khelo India representatives, women from Self-Help Groups and senior government officials gave the event a broad public character.
The walkathon from the DRDA office to the District Collector’s office, the floral tributes to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the public meeting and the pledge ceremonies across government offices collectively reinforced the importance of unity and national responsibility.
The programme concluded with a message that national strength comes from the collective efforts of its people. Preserving India’s unity and integrity requires not only remembering historical leaders but also following the values they represented in everyday life.
