Romania Reports Major Summer Immigration Enforcement Operation
BUCHAREST — Romanian immigration authorities have reported the results of a nationwide enforcement campaign conducted during the 2026 summer season, with thousands of inspections focused on illegal residence and undeclared employment involving foreign nationals.

The General Inspectorate for Immigration said officers carried out 1,628 actions, inspections and checks across the country during the summer. The activities took place in areas with large numbers of visitors, including festivals, cultural events and other seasonal gatherings, as well as workplaces and locations frequented by foreign nationals.
Authorities said the campaign was designed primarily to prevent and combat illegal residence and undeclared work while maintaining public order and safety.
As a result of the operations, 108 foreign nationals were removed from Romania under escort, while another 51 people were placed in public custody centres pending completion of the relevant procedures.
Immigration officers also issued 429 return decisions following violations of Romanian immigration rules.
In addition, authorities imposed 2,631 administrative penalties for breaches involving the legal status of foreign nationals and employment conditions.
The enforcement campaign involved cooperation between immigration police and other structures within Romania’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, as well as partner institutions responsible for migration-related matters.
Officials said the nationwide approach allowed authorities to conduct checks in different environments and respond to violations identified during the summer period.
The campaign comes as Romania continues to manage a growing foreign-worker population and seeks to ensure that employers comply with national rules governing the employment and residence of foreign nationals.
Authorities have stressed that immigration enforcement is not limited to individual checks. Inspections can also examine whether employers are respecting the legal requirements for hiring foreign workers and whether foreign nationals have the appropriate documents to remain and work in the country.
Romanian immigration police said operations will continue according to developments in the operational situation and applicable legislation.
The summer results highlight the scale of Romania’s ongoing efforts to regulate migration, combat illegal employment and ensure compliance with immigration rules.
