Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh | July 1, 2025 — A major shift has taken place in how Indian travelers book Tatkal tickets, as the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has officially rolled out a new Aadhaar-based policy. From July 1, 2025 onward, only those users who have completed Aadhaar authentication will be eligible to book Tatkal tickets via the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) platform.

This landmark update is designed to enhance the integrity of the Tatkal booking system by reducing fraudulent activity, blocking bots and touts, and promoting fairer access for genuine passengers with urgent travel needs. With this step, the government further strengthens its push towards digital identity integration under the broader umbrella of the Digital India movement.

Announced through the MIB’s official communication channels, the policy reflects a concerted effort by various ministries to create a more transparent and secure ticketing system. Key stakeholders such as the Prime Minister’s Office (@PMOIndia), the Ministry of Railways (@RailMinIndia), Union IT and Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw (@AshwiniVaishnaw), and the Unique Identification Authority of India (@UIDAI) have also been tagged in the announcement, emphasizing inter-agency cooperation in enforcing this change.

For regular travelers and last-minute commuters who depend on Tatkal services, this change means that Aadhaar linkage with their IRCTC account is now non-negotiable. The IRCTC has outlined a user-friendly process to enable Aadhaar verification, and passengers are urged to complete it well before they attempt to book a Tatkal ticket to avoid last-minute complications.

Although this regulation currently affects only Tatkal ticket bookings, it is seen as part of a broader governmental strategy to incorporate Aadhaar authentication across various digital public services. This could potentially extend to other forms of online railway services in the future.

Travelers are encouraged to visit the official IRCTC website or mobile app to access detailed steps for Aadhaar verification. Completing the process promptly ensures uninterrupted access to Tatkal services and adds an extra layer of security to users’ online bookings.

With this move, the message is clear: in today’s digital era, being “travel-ready” means being “Aadhaar-ready.”
