Tonga and Australia Strengthen Public Procurement Reforms With New Government Grant
NUKUʻALOFA — Tonga is strengthening its public procurement system through a new partnership with Australia aimed at improving government purchasing procedures and building specialist capacity within the public sector.

Tonga’s Ministry of Finance and the Australian Government, through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, have signed a grant agreement supporting the recruitment of a Principal Procurement Officer. The position is intended to help advance ongoing procurement reforms across the Kingdom.
The initiative is designed to improve the way government agencies plan, manage and oversee procurement activities.
Public procurement is an important part of government financial management because it determines how public funds are used to purchase goods, services and infrastructure.
The new specialist position is expected to provide additional technical expertise as Tonga continues developing its procurement framework.
The agreement comes as Tonga works with international development partners to strengthen public-sector systems and improve the implementation of government-funded projects.
Tonga’s Ministry of Finance has been working to improve economic and financial management while supporting reforms intended to increase transparency and accountability.
The procurement initiative is also connected to wider efforts to strengthen the country’s institutional capacity.
Tonga has an active portfolio of development projects supported by international partners, including programmes involving transport, education, health, trade facilitation and financial services. The country’s cooperation with the World Bank includes projects with combined approved financing of more than US$235 million.
Improving procurement procedures can help ensure that development funding is used efficiently and that projects deliver stronger results for communities.
The latest agreement therefore represents more than an administrative appointment. It is part of Tonga’s broader effort to strengthen public financial management and ensure that government investment produces measurable benefits.
Australia has been an important development partner for Tonga, supporting institutional strengthening and economic resilience across several areas.
The new procurement initiative is expected to contribute to greater professional capacity within Tonga’s public service and support more effective management of government expenditure.
As Tonga continues implementing its national development priorities, stronger procurement systems could help the government deliver infrastructure and essential services more efficiently.
