Pakistan Takes Centre Stage at SCO as Shehbaz Sharif Begins Kyrgyzstan Visit
Islamabad/Bishkek, September 1, 2026: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has begun a three-day official visit to Kyrgyzstan, where he is scheduled to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of State meeting and the SCO Plus Summit.
The visit, running from August 31 to September 2, comes with particular significance for Islamabad because Pakistan is set to assume the SCO Council of Heads of State chairmanship for 2026–27. The Pakistani government says the visit will provide an opportunity to strengthen political, economic and regional cooperation.
Bilateral Meetings Planned
During his stay in Bishkek, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to hold meetings with leaders participating in the SCO summit.
Pakistan has also highlighted its intention to use the visit to expand cooperation with Kyrgyzstan in areas including trade, investment, energy, regional connectivity, education and tourism.
The two sides are scheduled to conduct broader discussions on bilateral relations and exchange views on regional and international developments.
Pakistan Assumes SCO Leadership
The chairmanship gives Pakistan an important role in coordinating the organisation’s activities during the coming year.
Islamabad is expected to use the position to promote greater regional connectivity and practical cooperation among SCO members while strengthening its engagement with major Eurasian economies.
The SCO provides a platform bringing together several influential countries across Asia and Eurasia, making Pakistan’s new leadership role diplomatically significant.
World Nomad Games Also on Agenda
The prime minister is also scheduled to attend the opening ceremony of the World Nomad Games in Kyrgyzstan.
The event adds a cultural dimension to the visit and provides another opportunity for participating countries to strengthen people-to-people connections.

Pakistan’s government has placed particular emphasis on converting diplomatic relations into concrete economic opportunities.
Trade, investment, energy and transport connectivity are expected to remain important areas of discussion between Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan. Islamabad says the visit is intended to build on recent high-level exchanges and turn political goodwill into practical cooperation.
