El Niño Could Become Exceptionally Strong as Pacific Ocean Heat Raises Global Weather Risks

A rapidly strengthening El Niño is raising concerns about another period of heightened global weather disruption, with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warning that the phenomenon could become exceptionally powerful later this year.

The latest WMO assessment says El Niño is already firmly established in the tropical Pacific and is expected to intensify during the coming months. Forecasts indicate an almost 100% probability that the event will continue through February 2027.

Scientists are paying particular attention to the unusually warm ocean conditions driving the event. The tropical Pacific contains a substantial reservoir of excess heat, creating conditions capable of strengthening El Niño and influencing atmospheric circulation far beyond the region.

A Potentially Historic El Niño

WMO forecasts suggest that the current event could reach very strong intensity before reaching its maximum toward the end of 2026.

The organization has warned that the event could potentially become stronger than anything observed during its roughly four decades of modern monitoring. This does not mean every part of the world will experience the same effects, but a stronger El Niño generally increases the probability of major changes in rainfall and temperature patterns across many regions.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) had already identified a rapidly strengthening El Niño in August. Its outlook gave a greater than 90% probability of a very strong event during the Northern Hemisphere autumn and winter of 2026–27.

The Ocean Is Driving the Change

El Niño develops when the tropical Pacific undergoes significant changes in ocean temperature and atmospheric circulation.

During the current event, sea-surface temperatures across the central and eastern equatorial Pacific have risen substantially above normal levels. Beneath the surface, scientists have also detected an unusually large store of warm water.

That subsurface heat matters because it can provide additional energy to the ocean-atmosphere system as the event develops.

NASA satellite observations earlier this year detected elevated sea-surface height across parts of the tropical Pacific, another indicator of unusually warm water. The 2026 event was already strengthening by June.

Why El Niño Matters Around the World

El Niño is a natural climate phenomenon, but its consequences can extend far beyond the Pacific Ocean.

Changes in tropical Pacific temperatures influence atmospheric circulation, which can alter rainfall and temperature patterns across distant parts of the world.

Depending on location, communities can experience increased risks of drought, flooding, extreme heat or other unusual weather conditions.

WMO expects the strengthening event to increase the potential for disruption across sectors including agriculture, water resources, fisheries, energy, transportation and public health.

However, El Niño does not produce identical conditions everywhere. A strong event can increase the likelihood of certain climate anomalies without guaranteeing a particular outcome in every country or region.

Global Ocean Temperatures Add Another Concern

The developing El Niño is occurring against a backdrop of exceptionally warm global oceans.

In June 2026, Copernicus reported that global sea-surface temperatures had reached record levels for that time of year in two independent datasets. Scientists linked the unusual warmth to both the broader changing climate and the emergence of El Niño conditions.

Warmer oceans can influence the atmosphere by increasing evaporation and providing additional energy to weather systems. They can also contribute to marine heatwaves and place additional stress on ocean ecosystems.

This combination makes the current situation particularly important for climate scientists.

Extreme Weather Risks Could Increase

A powerful El Niño can disturb established patterns of rainfall and temperature.

Some regions may face heightened drought risks, while others can receive unusually heavy precipitation. Heat extremes may also become more likely in certain parts of the world.

The WMO has already reported drought and flood impacts associated with the developing event and expects risks to increase as El Niño strengthens.

The organization is therefore emphasizing preparation rather than waiting for disasters to occur.

Early Warnings Can Save Lives

One of the most important differences between today’s climate risks and those of previous decades is the availability of increasingly sophisticated forecasting systems.

Meteorological agencies can monitor ocean temperatures, atmospheric pressure, winds and rainfall patterns and provide warnings before many hazardous conditions develop.

WMO has launched an expanded preparedness effort involving national meteorological and hydrological services. The objective is to ensure that forecasts reach governments, emergency agencies, farmers, businesses and communities in time for preventive action.

Preparedness measures can include protecting water supplies, adjusting agricultural plans, strengthening flood defenses, preparing health systems for heat and ensuring emergency services are ready for rapidly changing conditions.

Climate Change Makes the Background Warmer

El Niño itself is a naturally recurring climate phenomenon, but it is developing within a planet that has already warmed substantially because of human greenhouse-gas emissions.

That distinction is important.

Scientists do not treat El Niño and human-caused climate change as the same phenomenon. Instead, El Niño temporarily shifts global temperatures and weather patterns on top of the longer-term warming trend.

The combination can produce particularly challenging conditions.

The previous major El Niño contributed to exceptional global temperatures in 2024. WMO now says the current event could push global temperatures to new records as its influence develops.

The Race Between Risk and Preparation

The strengthening El Niño represents both a scientific challenge and a test of global preparedness.

The forecasts provide governments with valuable lead time. That opportunity can be used to prepare vulnerable communities before extreme weather causes widespread damage.

At the same time, the broader climate crisis continues to increase long-term risks. Reducing greenhouse-gas emissions remains essential for limiting future warming, while adaptation and early-warning systems can help societies deal with hazards that cannot be avoided immediately.

The message from scientists is therefore not simply that a powerful El Niño is approaching.

It is that the world already has information about the growing risk—and the ability to act before many of its consequences arrive.

As the Pacific continues to warm and the 2026–27 El Niño develops, the effectiveness of preparedness efforts could determine how severely communities experience the coming period of heightened climate variability.
