Washington: US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have emphasized the importance of maintaining stable relations between the world’s two largest economies, while significant disagreements over trade, Taiwan, technology and other strategic issues remain.

The two leaders met in Washington as part of a high-level diplomatic engagement aimed at managing tensions between the United States and China. Their discussions covered several issues that have shaped relations between the two countries in recent years.

Trade remained an important part of the discussions. Washington and Beijing have been attempting to manage economic disagreements involving tariffs, market access and the movement of strategic goods. Both sides have an interest in preventing their economic relationship from deteriorating further, although differences remain over several areas.

Despite the diplomatic tone surrounding the meeting, major differences between the United States and China have not disappeared. The two governments continue to hold contrasting positions on Taiwan, technology restrictions, trade practices and several geopolitical questions.

The meeting nevertheless provides an opportunity for Washington and Beijing to maintain direct communication at the highest level. Regular dialogue can help reduce the possibility of misunderstandings at a time when military and economic competition between the two countries remains intense.

For the global economy, the stability of US-China relations remains particularly important. The two countries are major trading powers, and changes in their trade policies can affect companies, financial markets and supply chains around the world.

The latest engagement therefore carries significance beyond the bilateral relationship. Governments and businesses in Europe, Asia and other regions are closely watching whether Washington and Beijing can maintain a workable relationship while continuing to compete over strategic and economic interests.

The meeting does not eliminate the major disagreements between the two powers, but continued high-level communication provides a channel for negotiations and further diplomatic engagement.
