Anthropic Launches Claude Sonnet 5.5 With Faster and More Efficient AI Performance
San Francisco: Anthropic has launched Claude Sonnet 5.5, the second model in its Claude 5.5 family, expanding its artificial intelligence lineup with a model designed for coding, everyday professional tasks and the creation of documents, presentations and spreadsheets.

Faster Than Its Previous Generation
Anthropic says Claude Sonnet 5.5 runs more than 30 percent faster than Claude Sonnet 5 and can cost up to 30 percent less for most workloads.
The company has positioned the model as a faster and lower-cost complement to its more advanced Claude Opus 5.5, particularly for tasks that are well-defined and require efficient execution.
Major Focus on Coding
Software development is one of the main areas targeted by the new model.
Anthropic reports that Sonnet 5.5 achieved a 70.6 percent score on Terminal-Bench 4.0, an evaluation focused on agentic coding capabilities. The company says this represents a substantial improvement over the previous Sonnet model.
The model is designed to assist developers with building features, fixing bugs and handling longer software-engineering workflows.
Designed for Professional Work
Claude Sonnet 5.5 is also aimed at a wide range of workplace applications.
Users can employ the model for creating polished documents, presentations and spreadsheets, as well as other routine knowledge-work tasks.
Anthropic says the model can also handle long-horizon work and image understanding, expanding its usefulness beyond conventional text-based interactions.
Available Across Major Platforms
The new model is available through Anthropic’s Claude Platform and has also been made available through major cloud platforms, including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.
It is also integrated into Claude’s applications and developer tools, allowing organisations to incorporate the model into existing AI workflows.
Flexible Performance and Cost Controls
Anthropic has introduced different effort levels that allow users to balance response speed, token consumption and the amount of reasoning applied to a task.
Lower effort settings can be useful for routine work where speed and efficiency are priorities, while higher settings allow the model to spend more resources on complex tasks.
Part of Anthropic’s Expanding AI Family
Claude Sonnet 5.5 follows the introduction of Claude Opus 5.5 and forms part of Anthropic’s broader strategy to provide different AI models for different types of workloads.
The company has also said that Claude Haiku 5.5 is expected to join the family in the coming weeks, adding another option aimed at high-volume and cost-sensitive applications.
Competition in the AI Industry
The release comes as leading AI companies continue to develop increasingly capable models for coding, reasoning, business operations and autonomous software tasks.
With faster processing, lower operating costs and expanded professional capabilities, Sonnet 5.5 represents another step in the industry’s shift toward AI systems that can perform practical multi-step work rather than simply generate conversational responses.
