Global AI News: Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has signed a major seven-year cloud services agreement with Akamai Technologies worth $11.6 billion, securing additional computing infrastructure to support the rapidly growing workloads of its AI systems.

Under the deal, Anthropic will use Akamai Cloud’s distributed infrastructure and software primarily to support the company’s growing CPU workload requirements. As part of the arrangement, Akamai has issued Anthropic a warrant that could allow the AI company to acquire shares equivalent to approximately 5% of Akamai’s outstanding common stock. About 2% is connected to the initial $11.6 billion commitment, while the remaining portion would depend on additional business between the companies.

Akamai estimates that it will need approximately $5.5 billion in capital expenditure related to the initial agreement. The company also plans to increase its 2026 capital spending by around $1.7 billion, including spending to secure critical supply-chain components such as memory.

The financial impact of the agreement is expected to build gradually rather than immediately. Akamai expects the related revenue to begin during the second half of 2027, with the business projected to reach a substantially higher run rate as additional infrastructure becomes operational.

The deal comes as Anthropic continues to expand the computing resources required to develop and operate increasingly sophisticated AI models. Demand for AI services has pushed leading technology companies to secure large amounts of cloud capacity, data-center infrastructure, networking equipment and specialized computing hardware.

The scale of the agreement also illustrates how the economics of artificial intelligence are increasingly connected to infrastructure investment.
