India Marks Historic Milestone as Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla Heads to International Space Station

New Delhi, June 2025 – In a momentous development for India’s space journey, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force has embarked on a groundbreaking mission to the International Space Station (ISS), becoming the first Indian astronaut to do so. This mission, which also includes astronauts from the United States, Hungary, and Poland, signals a new chapter in global space cooperation.
The mission’s successful launch has been hailed as a significant achievement in India’s scientific and technological pursuits. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed pride in the nation’s representation on this international venture. Taking to social media, he shared, “The successful launch of the international space mission with astronauts from India, Hungary, Poland, and the USA is a proud moment. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla carries with him the dreams and determination of 1.4 billion Indians. Wishing him and the entire crew a safe and successful journey.”
The Indian Air Force also saluted the moment, celebrating Shukla’s transition from an Air Warrior to a space explorer. “From ruling the skies to venturing into space—Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla exemplifies the courage and spirit of the IAF,” read the official IAF statement. The post drew a powerful parallel with India’s first space traveler, Squadron Leader Rakesh Sharma, whose 1984 space mission set the foundation for India’s space ambitions.
This journey is more than just a space mission—it is a symbolic reaffirmation of India’s expanding vision in aerospace and international collaboration. As Group Captain Shukla moves towards the ISS, he carries not only scientific goals but the pride and aspirations of a nation poised for even greater achievements in space exploration.
India watches this voyage with admiration, hope, and immense national pride.
