KYIV — Ukraine’s capital endured one of its deadliest nights in recent months after Russia launched a massive wave of drones and missiles that struck multiple locations across Kyiv, killing at least 18 people and injuring more than 90 others. The large-scale attack caused widespread destruction in residential neighborhoods and renewed concerns over the intensifying conflict between the two countries.
Emergency crews worked through the night and into the following day, searching for survivors trapped beneath piles of concrete and twisted steel. Hospitals across Kyiv received dozens of injured civilians suffering from blast injuries, burns, and wounds caused by shattered glass and collapsing buildings. Medical personnel continued treating patients while authorities urged residents to follow air raid warnings and remain inside shelters whenever alerts were issued.
Russia said the operation was aimed at military facilities, energy infrastructure, and airports. According to Moscow, the strikes were carried out in retaliation for recent Ukrainian attacks on Russian civilian infrastructure. Russian officials maintained that the military campaign targeted strategic objectives linked to Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
Ukrainian authorities, however, argued that residential areas bore the brunt of the overnight assault, emphasizing the heavy civilian casualties and extensive damage to apartment complexes. Officials stated that rescue operations would continue until every missing resident had been accounted for.
