Delhi-NCR CNG Prices Rise by ₹3.89 Per Kg as Global LNG Costs Surge
CNG users across Delhi-NCR are facing higher fuel expenses after Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) increased the price of compressed natural gas by ₹3.89 per kg from Saturday morning.
The revised price took effect at 6:00 AM on August 29, pushing the retail CNG price in Delhi from ₹83.09 to ₹86.98 per kg. The increase has also affected several neighbouring cities, adding to the operating costs of motorists and commercial transport operators.
New CNG Rates Across Major NCR Cities
Following the latest revision, CNG is now priced at ₹95.59 per kg in Noida and Ghaziabad, while motorists in Gurugram pay ₹92.01 per kg. The rate in Meerut has moved to ₹95.47 per kg. Prices vary between locations because of differences in local taxes and other regional factors.
The revision represents the fifth increase in Delhi-NCR CNG prices this year. Earlier in May, IGL raised prices by a combined ₹6 per kg through several revisions.
Why Has CNG Become More Expensive?
IGL has linked the latest increase to the sharp rise in international liquefied natural gas prices.
A significant portion of the gas required for the CNG segment is sourced through imported spot LNG. According to the company, international LNG prices have remained elevated following renewed tensions in West Asia and disruptions affecting energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.
The company has also pointed to stronger European demand for natural-gas storage ahead of the winter season. These developments have increased pressure on international gas markets and raised input costs for city gas distributors.
Impact on Drivers and Commuters
The increase is expected to be felt most directly by people and businesses that depend heavily on CNG.
Auto-rickshaw drivers, taxi operators, app-based cab drivers, public transport providers and commercial vehicle owners may see their daily fuel bills increase. Private motorists using CNG-powered vehicles will also have to spend more each time they refuel.
Transport operators have previously raised concerns that repeated increases in fuel costs can squeeze their earnings and potentially create pressure for higher passenger fares.
Household PNG Prices Remain Unchanged
The latest announcement does not change the price of piped natural gas used by households in Delhi for cooking.
The domestic PNG price remains at ₹49.59 per standard cubic metre, according to the latest available price information.
This means the immediate impact of the latest IGL decision is concentrated on CNG-powered transportation rather than household cooking-gas consumers.
Global Energy Market Behind Local Price Pressure
The Delhi-NCR increase highlights how developments in international energy markets can influence fuel prices in Indian cities.
IGL has said that global LNG prices have risen sharply compared with pre-crisis levels. Disruptions to LNG cargo movements through the Strait of Hormuz, combined with increased demand for gas storage in Europe, have contributed to the pressure on imported gas costs.
The company has described the latest ₹3.89 increase as a calibrated adjustment intended to partially absorb higher input costs while maintaining reliable CNG supplies.
