Gunmen Kill Police and Security Personnel in Southern Ethiopia Attack
Several police officers and security personnel have been killed in a gun attack in southern Ethiopia, according to regional authorities, triggering an investigation into the deadly ambush.

The attack took place in Geresse Zuria district of the Gamo Zone in South Ethiopia Regional State. Authorities said the security personnel were carrying out their duties when they were suddenly attacked by armed gunmen.
The South Ethiopia Regional State Police Commission described the incident as a serious attack and released a statement mourning the deaths of the officers and security personnel. However, officials have not publicly disclosed the exact number of people killed.
The police commission shared photographs of nine police and security personnel identified as victims of the attack, while investigations continued into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities also said efforts were underway to identify and apprehend those responsible.
The attack occurred as Ethiopia faces renewed security challenges in several parts of the country. Fighting has intensified in northern Ethiopia, particularly in the Tigray region, while authorities in other areas continue to deal with armed violence and security threats.
Officials have not yet publicly established whether the southern Ethiopia attack is connected to the wider conflict in the north. Investigators are expected to examine the identity of the attackers, their possible motives and whether the incident was linked to an organized armed group.
The deaths have also raised concerns over the safety of security personnel operating in areas where armed groups and local conflicts remain active.
Regional authorities have expressed condolences to the families of those killed and to their colleagues in the police and security services. Security forces are continuing efforts to locate the attackers as the investigation develops.
The incident adds another layer to Ethiopia’s broader security situation, with authorities facing simultaneous challenges from renewed conflict in the north and localized armed violence in other regions.
