Indonesian Universities Face a New Mission as Artificial Intelligence Reshapes Higher Education

Jakarta, August 29, 2026: The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is prompting Indonesia’s higher education sector to reconsider what universities should deliver in an increasingly technology-driven world. Rather than functioning primarily as places where students receive information, universities are being encouraged to become stronger centers of knowledge creation, critical thinking and human development.

Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Stella Christie, has called on universities to strengthen their contribution to knowledge creation, knowledge sharing and human-resource development as AI changes the way information is produced and accessed.

AI Is Changing the Traditional Role of Universities

Artificial intelligence can collect, process and present enormous amounts of information at remarkable speed. This capability is forcing educational institutions to reconsider the traditional model in which teachers primarily transmit facts and students primarily absorb them.

Christie argued that the bigger challenge now is developing people who can create knowledge, judge its importance and understand its meaning. In this environment, simply having access to information is no longer enough.

The emphasis is increasingly shifting toward the ability to ask meaningful questions, evaluate evidence and determine whether information is relevant to a particular problem.

Human Judgment Remains Essential

The growing availability of AI tools does not eliminate the need for human expertise. Instead, it creates a greater need for people who can use technology intelligently and responsibly.

AI can assist researchers and students by processing information, examining datasets and identifying patterns. However, universities need to ensure that people remain capable of developing original ideas and asking fundamental questions, according to the Indonesian ministry.

This distinction could become increasingly important as AI-generated information becomes easier to obtain.

Knowledge Curation Becomes a Key Skill

One of the major themes emerging from Indonesia’s higher education discussion is knowledge curation.

The discussion comes as Indonesian universities are also developing new facilities and programs focused on artificial intelligence. For example, Universitas Multimedia Nusantara and Google for Education Indonesia recently introduced an AI Learning Center designed to support training, research and focused academic work. The center includes dedicated training, research and focus areas and is intended to develop both technical abilities and human skills such as critical thinking and ethical judgment.

Such initiatives indicate that AI adoption in higher education is moving beyond classroom experimentation toward broader institutional strategies.

Preparing Students for an AI-Driven Future

The transformation of higher education will likely require a combination of technological literacy and distinctly human abilities.

Students will need to understand how AI systems work and how to use them effectively, while also developing creativity, judgment, communication, ethical reasoning and the ability to identify meaningful problems.

For universities, the challenge is therefore not simply whether to adopt AI. The deeper question is how to integrate the technology without weakening the human intellectual capabilities that make education valuable.

Indonesia’s latest discussion points toward a broader definition of what universities should accomplish in the AI era.
