Lando Norris Commits His Formula 1 Future to McLaren Until at Least 2030

Reigning Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris has secured his long-term future with McLaren after signing a new contract that will keep him with the British team until at least the end of the 2030 season.

The agreement also contains a multi-year option that could extend the partnership beyond 2030. Norris announced the news at McLaren’s Woking headquarters during a team event, ending speculation about whether the 26-year-old could eventually move to another Formula 1 outfit.

Norris Chooses Stability Over a New Challenge

Norris has spent his entire Formula 1 career with McLaren.

He joined the team’s junior programme in 2017 before making his Grand Prix debut for the outfit in 2019. Since then, the relationship has developed from a young-driver project into one of the most successful partnerships on the current Formula 1 grid.

Norris said he is happy at McLaren and would be pleased if the team ultimately became the only Formula 1 organisation he raced for throughout his career.

From Young Prospect to World Champion

Norris’s journey with McLaren has closely followed the team’s own transformation.

When he entered Formula 1, McLaren was still rebuilding after several difficult seasons. The team gradually returned to the front of the grid, eventually winning the constructors’ championship in 2024 and 2025.

Norris completed that resurgence by winning his first Drivers’ World Championship in 2025, becoming McLaren’s first drivers’ champion since Lewis Hamilton won the title with the team in 2008.

A Strong Finish to the 2026 Season So Far

The contract announcement comes during a period of improved form for Norris.

He has won the Hungarian Grand Prix and the Dutch Grand Prix, giving him consecutive victories before the Formula 1 championship moves into its next phase.

His Dutch Grand Prix victory on August 23 was particularly significant because it strengthened his hopes of defending the world title after a less convincing start to the season.

Despite those recent victories, Norris remains fourth in the 2026 championship standings and trails Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli by 83 points with 11 races remaining.

Norris Still Wants a Faster McLaren

The contract extension does not mean Norris believes McLaren has solved every competitive problem.

The driver has acknowledged that the car still needs improvements, particularly in areas that affect performance through slower corners.

His recent victories have demonstrated what Norris can achieve when the car is competitive, but he has indicated that McLaren still needs additional performance if it is to mount a sustained championship challenge.

McLaren has not released the financial terms of Norris’s new agreement.

Various media reports have speculated about a substantial increase in his earnings following his championship success. Norris, however, has played down the figures circulating publicly and indicated that his salary remains below the levels associated with established multiple-time champions such as Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.

The exact value of the contract therefore remains undisclosed.

A Special Gift From McLaren

As part of the announcement, McLaren also presented Norris with an MCL39, the car he drove during his championship-winning 2025 campaign.

The gesture reflects his importance to the team’s recent history.

The car represents the season in which Norris achieved the biggest accomplishment of his career and helped McLaren complete its return to the top of Formula 1.

Norris Has Already Set Team Records

Norris has now competed in 163 Grands Prix for McLaren, more than any other driver in the team’s history.

His McLaren record includes 13 Grand Prix victories, 18 pole positions and 48 podium finishes.

A contract running through 2030 could make his association with McLaren one of the longest driver-team relationships in modern Formula 1.

Norris’s decision also comes during a period when several leading drivers are committing themselves to long-term arrangements.

Max Verstappen has also committed to Red Bull through 2030, creating the possibility of the two recent title rivals remaining at their respective teams for years to come.
