Large-Scale Military Exercise Begins Across Latgale
RIGA: Latvia is preparing for the active phase of its nationwide Namejs 2026 defence exercise, with military personnel, equipment and drones scheduled to operate across the Latgale region from September 4 to September 6.
The exercise is designed to test Latvia’s ability to respond to a major national-security situation while strengthening cooperation between military units and other elements involved in national defence.
Residents in parts of Latgale have been advised to expect increased movement of military vehicles and soldiers during the three-day exercise. Drone activity and temporary restrictions on some roads may also affect normal traffic.
Authorities have warned that people living near training areas could hear unusual levels of noise as military activities take place. The temporary disruptions are part of the exercise and are intended to replicate conditions that could occur during a real security emergency.
Latgale has particular strategic importance because of its location in eastern Latvia. Conducting exercises in the region allows defence forces to test their readiness under realistic geographical and logistical conditions.
The drills also provide an opportunity to evaluate communication between different units and improve coordination during rapidly changing situations.
Officials have stressed that the presence of military equipment and personnel during the exercise does not indicate that an emergency has occurred. The activities are planned training operations carried out as part of Latvia’s defence preparations.
For local communities, the exercise may temporarily change traffic patterns and everyday activity, but authorities are asking residents to follow instructions issued by security and local officials.
What Happens Next
The active phase of Namejs 2026 will continue from September 4 through September 6. Military movements, drone flights and temporary traffic restrictions are expected in selected areas of Latgale during the exercise.
