Malaysia: King Defers Decision on Former Prime Minister Najib Razak’s Clemency Request
Malaysia’s King, Sultan Ibrahim, has postponed a decision on a new clemency request submitted by former Prime Minister Najib Razak, leaving the politically sensitive issue unresolved for now.
The decision was made during a Pardons Board meeting on Friday. The board granted pardons to 65 inmates but deferred consideration of Najib’s request until a future meeting.
Najib, who served as Malaysia’s prime minister from 2009 to 2018, has been imprisoned since 2022 after Malaysia’s highest court upheld his corruption conviction linked to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.
The former premier has consistently denied wrongdoing and has sought further clemency. His latest request has become politically sensitive because his party, UMNO, is part of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s governing coalition.
Najib’s case has previously resulted in a reduction of his original 12-year prison sentence. He was later handed an additional 15-year sentence and a major financial penalty in a separate 1MDB-related case, which he has appealed.
The latest postponement means Malaysia’s political leadership will continue to face debate over Najib’s legal status, the powers of the monarchy and the government’s approach to corruption convictions.
The issue is likely to remain an important subject in Malaysian politics as the governing coalition attempts to balance political alliances with its stated commitment to the rule of law.
