Maldives Announces Five-Year National Respect Initiative to Promote Social Values
The Government of Maldives has announced a five-year National Respect Initiative aimed at strengthening values of respect, good character and responsible behaviour across Maldivian society.

The initiative was approved by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu following consideration of a proposal submitted by the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage. The Cabinet approved the related decisions during its meeting on September 6.
The programme will be implemented nationwide under the slogan “Ikhthiraam ge Ufaa – Mujthamau ge Nafaa,” which translates as “Value of Respect – Benefit to Society.”
As part of the initiative, the government has decided to establish a dedicated nine-member committee to provide strategic guidance and oversight. The committee will bring together representatives from several government institutions and Public Service Media.
The participating institutions include the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage, Ministry of Defence and National Service, Ministry of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology, Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises, Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development, Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, and Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fitness.
The committee structure brings together institutions responsible for culture, education, public administration, security, religion, finance and youth affairs. This gives the initiative a broad government framework rather than limiting it to a single ministry.
The government has also decided to designate one day each year as National Respect Day. The annual observance will be held at the national level and will also serve as the official inauguration of the five-year initiative.
The National Respect Initiative is based on the government’s stated objective of revitalising values that have traditionally been regarded as important within Maldivian society.
The programme places particular emphasis on respect and good character as social values. Government institutions involved in the initiative will participate in implementing and supporting activities during the five-year period.
The establishment of the nine-member committee will provide an institutional mechanism for coordinating the initiative. Its role will include providing strategic direction and overseeing implementation across the participating sectors.
Public Service Media is also included in the committee, giving the country’s public broadcaster a role alongside government ministries and institutions.
The Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage submitted the proposal that led to the Cabinet decision. The ministry will therefore have an important role in coordinating the cultural and social dimensions of the programme.
The initiative also involves the education and youth sectors. Their participation connects the programme with younger generations and educational institutions, while the involvement of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Endowments adds a religious and cultural dimension to the government’s approach.
The government has framed the initiative as a nationwide programme rather than a short-term campaign. Its five-year duration provides a continuing structure for activities designed to promote the values identified in the programme.
The decision to establish an annual National Respect Day also creates a recurring national observance connected with the initiative. The day will provide a formal occasion for the country to recognise and promote the programme’s central message.
The Maldives Government has placed the National Respect Initiative among its broader efforts to strengthen social values and community wellbeing. The programme will now move forward through the institutional structure approved by the Cabinet.
With the committee formation and annual National Respect Day included in the plan, the government has established both an oversight mechanism and a national observance for the five-year programme.
The initiative represents a government-led effort to place respect, good character and social responsibility at the centre of a nationwide programme involving culture, education, youth, religion and public institutions.
