Neeraj Chopra Ruled Out of Asian Games After Ankle Injury Ends 2026 Season

India’s leading javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has suffered a fresh setback just as his 2026 season appeared to be gaining momentum. The two-time Olympic medallist has announced that an ankle ligament tear sustained during training will keep him out for the remainder of the year.

The injury means Chopra will miss the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, as well as the Diamond League Final and the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships.

Injury Arrives at a Difficult Moment

The timing of the setback makes the news particularly disappointing for the Indian star.

Chopra had recently delivered his strongest performance of the season at the Lausanne Diamond League, recording a season-best throw of 88.05 metres. That performance had suggested that he was beginning to rediscover his rhythm after a difficult period affected by injuries.

However, the athlete said the ankle problem occurred shortly after the Lausanne competition during a training session.

After discussions with his medical team and coaches, Chopra decided that ending his season was the safest option.

Asian Games Title Defence Ends Before It Begins

Chopra was expected to be one of India’s biggest medal contenders at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, scheduled for September 19 to October 4.

He had won the men’s javelin title at both the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games and the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games.

His absence means he will not have the opportunity to attempt a third consecutive Asian Games gold medal.

For Indian athletics, the withdrawal represents a major loss because Chopra has been one of the country’s most reliable performers at major international competitions.

A Promising Comeback Cut Short

Chopra’s 2026 campaign had already started later than planned following a lengthy recovery from a back problem.

He returned to competition at the Doha Diamond League in June and finished fourth with a throw of 85.69m.

He then claimed silver at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games with an 85.83m effort.

The Lausanne performance followed, with his 88.05m throw providing the clearest indication that his form was improving.

The ankle injury has now brought that comeback phase to an unexpected stop.

Diamond League Final Also Lost

Chopra had qualified for the Diamond League Final in Brussels, which was scheduled for September 5.

His withdrawal means he will not be able to compete for the prestigious season-ending title.

He also loses the chance to participate in the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest in September.

India’s Javelin Plans Must Now Change

The Indian athletics team will have to adjust its Asian Games strategy without its biggest javelin star.

The Athletics Federation of India has indicated that it will select a replacement for Chopra.

Among the athletes being considered are Rohit Yadav, Yashvir Singh and Sachin Yadav, with the final decision expected through the established selection process.

Yashvir won bronze at the Commonwealth Games, while Rohit Yadav has also produced strong performances during the season.

Sri Lanka’s Pathirage Adds to the Challenge

Even with Chopra healthy, the Asian Games javelin competition was expected to be highly competitive.

Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage has emerged as a major force in the event and defeated Chopra in both the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and Lausanne Diamond League.

Pathirage produced a huge throw in Glasgow and subsequently remained ahead of Chopra in Lausanne, where Chopra’s 88.05m was narrowly beaten.

The Indian team will therefore face a demanding contest in Japan even without its leading athlete.

Another Chapter in Chopra’s Injury Battles

Injuries have interrupted Chopra’s career several times.

He underwent elbow surgery in 2019, missed the 2022 Commonwealth Games because of a groin injury and has dealt with various physical problems during subsequent seasons.

A back injury caused another lengthy interruption before his 2026 return.

The latest ankle injury is therefore another setback in a career otherwise defined by extraordinary consistency at the highest level.

Chopra Focuses on Recovery

Despite his disappointment, Chopra has indicated that his priority is now rehabilitation.

The athlete has said that he wants to recover properly rather than risk making the injury worse by returning prematurely.

That approach could be important given the demanding nature of elite javelin throwing, which places considerable stress on the lower body during the throwing motion.

India’s Olympic Champion Remains Optimistic

Chopra’s absence will undoubtedly be felt at the Asian Games, but the decision to prioritise recovery could prove more important for his long-term career.

At 28, the javelin star still has significant time ahead of him in international athletics.

His career already includes an Olympic gold medal from Tokyo, an Olympic silver from Paris and multiple major championship achievements.

The immediate goal is now to return to full fitness rather than chase results during the remainder of 2026.

A Major Blow, But Not the End

For Indian fans, Chopra’s withdrawal is a major disappointment, particularly because it came after signs that he was returning to top form.

Yet the season-best performance in Lausanne also provides a positive indication of his competitive ability before the injury.

India will now turn to its other javelin throwers at the Asian Games, while Chopra begins another rehabilitation programme.

The 2026 season may have ended earlier than he wanted, but the larger objective remains clear: recover completely, rebuild his fitness and return to competition stronger.

For one of India’s greatest track-and-field athletes, the latest injury is another difficult chapter—but not necessarily the final one. :::
