Seoul: North Korea has issued a fresh warning to South Korea, saying the country could become a major military target if it develops into a regional hub for collective defence cooperation led by the United States.

The warning was issued as security tensions continue across the Korean Peninsula, where North Korea has repeatedly criticized the growing military cooperation between Seoul and Washington.

North Korean officials said that South Korea’s participation in expanded US-led security arrangements could change the country’s strategic position and increase the risk of confrontation.

Pyongyang described South Korea as potentially becoming a “decisive target” if Seoul takes on a larger role within collective defence structures.

The statement reflects North Korea’s longstanding opposition to the US military presence in South Korea and to closer defence coordination between Washington and Seoul.

The United States and South Korea maintain a formal military alliance and regularly cooperate on defence, intelligence and military preparedness. Washington has said that its presence in the region is intended to support deterrence and regional security.

North Korea, however, views the alliance as a direct threat. Pyongyang has repeatedly argued that US military deployments and joint exercises create an unstable security environment on the peninsula.

The latest warning comes as countries in the wider Indo-Pacific region are strengthening security partnerships in response to growing strategic competition.

South Korea has been expanding cooperation with the United States and other partners on missile defence, military technology and regional security. North Korea has strongly objected to such developments.

The Korean Peninsula remains one of the world’s most sensitive military flashpoints. North Korea possesses nuclear weapons and a growing range of ballistic missile capabilities, while South Korea is protected by its alliance with the United States.

Any serious deterioration in relations could therefore have consequences beyond the two Koreas.

The dispute also involves wider regional powers, including China, Japan, Russia and the United States. Developments on the peninsula are closely watched because of their potential impact on security and trade throughout East Asia.

North Korea has repeatedly maintained that its nuclear and missile programmes are necessary for national defence. It has rejected international demands for unilateral denuclearisation and has continued to strengthen its military capabilities.

South Korea has responded by emphasizing deterrence and closer cooperation with Washington.

The latest statement from Pyongyang does not itself indicate that military action is imminent. However, the strong language demonstrates the continuing level of tension surrounding the two countries’ competing security policies.

Diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions remain difficult. Major disagreements continue over North Korea’s nuclear programme, military exercises, sanctions and the presence of US forces in the region.

For South Korea, maintaining close defence cooperation with the United States remains an important element of its national security policy. For North Korea, preventing what it considers increasing military pressure from hostile countries remains a central objective.

The latest warning is therefore likely to add another layer to the already complex security situation in Northeast Asia.

Future developments will depend on how Seoul, Washington and Pyongyang respond to changes in regional defence arrangements and whether diplomatic channels can be used to prevent further escalation.
