Odisha T20 League CM Trophy 2026 Launched at Barabati Stadium to Discover Rural Cricket Talent

Cuttack, Odisha | September Odisha has taken another step toward strengthening grassroots sports with the launch of the Odisha T20 League CM Trophy 2026 at the iconic Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated the cricket tournament on Sunday, marking the addition of cricket to the state’s Chief Minister’s Trophy sporting programme.
The new competition has been designed to search for promising cricket players from rural and semi-urban areas across Odisha’s 30 districts. Organisers see the tournament as a platform through which young players can gain competitive experience and attract attention beyond their local cricketing circuits.
Cricket joins the Chief Minister’s Trophy programme
Cricket is the fifth sport to be brought under the Chief Minister’s Trophy initiative, following disciplines including football, kho-kho, kabaddi and volleyball.

Addressing the inaugural gathering, Chief Minister Majhi highlighted the growing role of sport as a potential career pathway for young people. He said the expansion of professional leagues, particularly in T20 cricket, has created new opportunities for emerging players.
The Chief Minister also pointed to the involvement of former India cricketer Suresh Raina and former Odisha cricketer Debashish Mohanty as ambassadors associated with the tournament. Their presence, he said, could motivate aspiring players and strengthen the connection between grassroots cricket and the professional game.
Majhi said Odisha possesses considerable sporting potential and that systematic identification of promising athletes could help the state produce more players capable of reaching national competitions and the Indian Premier League.
Major sports infrastructure plans announced

The launch event also featured details of the Odisha government’s plans to expand sports infrastructure across the state.
According to the announcement, modern sports stadiums are planned for all 314 blocks of Odisha, with an estimated investment of ₹4,124 crore. The initiative is intended to make sporting facilities more accessible to athletes outside the state’s major urban centres.
A high-tech sports complex is also planned at Gothapatna in Bhubaneswar.
The Chief Minister further said that the historic Barabati Stadium would undergo comprehensive renovation, with the objective of developing it into a leading sporting venue in India.
The Odisha Cricket Association’s initiative to establish an Under-14 Cricket Academy was also welcomed during the event. Such programmes could provide younger players with structured coaching and an early pathway into competitive cricket.
Suresh Raina backs grassroots cricket initiative
Former India international Suresh Raina recalled his previous appearance at Barabati Stadium while representing India against Sri Lanka.

Speaking at the launch, Raina praised the Odisha government’s initiative and said tournaments at the grassroots level could help young players turn their interest in cricket into a serious sporting pursuit.
He expressed hope that the competition would help uncover a new generation of talented cricketers from Odisha.
Six teams to participate
The inaugural edition features six teams, with players, captains and coaching staff receiving an opportunity to compete in a structured T20 environment.
The tournament is intended to give emerging cricketers exposure to higher-level competition while helping selectors and coaches identify players with the potential to progress to state, national and professional cricket.
The launch ceremony brought together senior government representatives, elected representatives, Odisha Cricket Association officials, former cricketers, coaches, players and other sports personalities.

Among those present were Chief Whip Saroj Kumar Pradhan, Barabati-Cuttack MLA Sofia Firdous, Cuttack Sadar MLA Prakash Chandra Sethi, Cuttack-Choudwar MLA Souvik Biswal, Angul MLA and OCA Apex Council member Pratap Chandra Pradhan, Tirtol MLA Ramakanta Bhoi, Odisha Football Association Secretary and Odisha Athletic Association President Dr. Ashirbad Behera, former cricketer Debashish Mohanty, OCA President Pankaj Lochan Mohanty, Vice-President Jagmohan Pattnaik and Secretary Sanjay Behera, along with other association members and guests.
Focus on discovering talent beyond major cities
A key objective of the Odisha T20 League CM Trophy is to widen the talent pool by looking beyond established cricketing centres.
Young players from different districts will have an opportunity to compete under a common platform, potentially giving coaches and selectors a broader view of Odisha’s cricketing talent.

The initiative comes at a time when T20 cricket has created numerous domestic and professional opportunities for young players. For aspiring cricketers from rural areas, access to organised tournaments, quality coaching and competitive exposure can play an important role in their development.
With the new league, Odisha is seeking to connect grassroots cricket with a wider sporting ecosystem while simultaneously expanding its infrastructure.
The Odisha T20 League CM Trophy 2026 therefore represents an effort to combine competitive cricket, talent identification and sports development under one state-level programme. Its long-term impact will depend on how effectively emerging players are supported after being identified and how the tournament develops in subsequent editions.
