Six Dead After Student Accommodation Building Collapses in Delhi’s Satya Niketan
NEW DELHI — Six people have died after a multi-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, triggering a large overnight rescue operation involving the National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Police, fire services and disaster-management teams.
The building, located near Delhi University’s South Campus, was being used as a boys’ paying guest accommodation. Officials said 11 people had been rescued from the debris as authorities continued checking the site for anyone who might still be trapped.
Five-Storey Structure Collapses Suddenly
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in the densely populated Satya Niketan locality.
The approximately 50-year-old structure had a basement and five upper floors. CCTV footage captured the building collapsing within seconds, sending a large cloud of dust across the surrounding street.
The collapse immediately brought emergency personnel to the area as residents and first responders began searching through the rubble for survivors.
Rescue Operation Continued Through the Night
Teams from the Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police, NDRF and Delhi Disaster Management Authority worked through the night to clear the debris.
Rescuers used specialized equipment and sniffer dogs while carefully searching different sections of the collapsed structure. The operation was complicated by the condition of nearby buildings and the narrow, congested surroundings.
Officials said one additional person recovered during the overnight operation was found dead, taking the confirmed death toll to six.
Repair Work Under Investigation
The precise cause of the collapse has not yet been formally established.
Preliminary information indicates that repair or renovation work was being carried out in the basement before the building came down. Authorities are investigating whether work on the lower portion of the ageing structure weakened its support system.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said preliminary findings pointed toward water accumulation in the basement combined with ongoing repair work as possible contributing factors. Officials have emphasized that the investigation will determine the actual cause.
Building Owner Faces Investigation
Police have registered a case against the building owner and other individuals in connection with the collapse.
A magisterial inquiry has also been ordered to examine the circumstances surrounding the disaster and determine whether safety regulations were violated.
The civic authorities have separately moved against the property, with a demolition order issued for the affected premises under provisions of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act.

The disaster has renewed concerns about the condition of buildings being used as private hostels and paying guest accommodations in areas surrounding Delhi University.
Satya Niketan has become an important student housing centre because of its proximity to South Campus. Older residential structures have increasingly been converted into accommodation for students and young professionals.

AIIMS Treats Injured Victims
Several people rescued from the site were taken to hospitals for treatment.
AIIMS Trauma Centre received 11 patients following the collapse. Five were brought dead, while another critically injured victim subsequently died, bringing the confirmed death toll to six. Other injured people remained under medical care.
Authorities Promise Accountability
The Delhi government has said responsibility will be fixed after the investigation.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the site to review the rescue operation and instructed officials to use all available resources. Government authorities also said action would be taken against those found responsible for the collapse.
The focus remains on completing the search operation safely while preventing further danger to rescue workers and nearby residents.
Traffic Disrupted Around Satya Niketan
The emergency response also affected traffic around the South Campus area.
Delhi Traffic Police advised motorists to avoid roads surrounding the accident site so that ambulances, rescue vehicles and heavy equipment could move freely.
Officials appealed to members of the public not to gather close to the collapsed structure because unrestricted access is essential for rescue operations.
