New York: Türkiye has stepped up its diplomatic engagement in New York as Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held a series of high-level meetings on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

Fidan met European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas at the Turkish House in New York, with the meeting focusing on bilateral relations and broader diplomatic issues. The Turkish Foreign Ministry confirmed the talks but did not publicly disclose detailed information about the discussions.

The Turkish foreign minister also held separate meetings with Bosnia and Herzegovina Foreign Minister Elmedin Konakovic and Brunei’s Prince Abdul Mateen. These meetings formed part of Ankara’s wider diplomatic activity during the UN General Assembly’s high-level week.

Fidan’s diplomatic schedule also included discussions with EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner. Migration management, internal security cooperation and Türkiye-EU relations were among the areas connected to the engagement.

Another major focus of Türkiye’s diplomatic activity has been Libya. Fidan participated in an international meeting on peace, unity and prosperity in Libya, attended by representatives from Germany, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Qatar, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

During the Libya meeting, Fidan emphasized the importance of maintaining the country’s unity and supporting a political process led by Libyans. He also reiterated Türkiye’s support for efforts to establish unified political and security institutions in Libya.

Fidan’s meetings come at a time when the UN General Assembly has brought senior officials from across the world together in New York to discuss major international and regional issues.

The Turkish government has sought to use the annual diplomatic gathering to strengthen communication with European officials and other international partners while discussing conflicts and political developments affecting the Middle East, North Africa and Europe.

Libya remains an important part of Türkiye’s regional diplomacy. Ankara has continued to advocate dialogue among Libya’s political factions and has expressed support for strengthening the country’s economic and security institutions.

Fidan also chaired the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s annual coordination meeting in New York, where ministers discussed developments involving Gaza, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Iran, Yemen, Libya, Sudan and Somalia.

The series of meetings highlights the broad range of diplomatic issues Türkiye is addressing during the UN General Assembly.

With international attention focused on conflicts, migration, regional security and political transitions, Ankara is continuing discussions with European and regional partners on issues that extend beyond bilateral relations.
