Two Missing Minors Rescued in Kenya as Abduction Suspect Arrested in Mombasa
MOMBASA, KENYA: Kenyan detectives have rescued two minors who had been reported missing and arrested a key suspect in connection with their alleged abduction, bringing a major development to an investigation that has stretched across two counties.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations said the children were allegedly taken from the Sensera area of Kiembeni in Mombasa County on August 25. Their disappearance was reported two days later, prompting detectives from the Kisauni Sub-County area to begin tracing their movements and identifying those believed to be involved.
Investigators said the suspect, identified as Caleb Okumu Ngwena, allegedly acted together with another person who has not yet been arrested. Police believe the children were deliberately prevented from communicating with their families before being moved away from Mombasa.
According to the investigation, the minors were transported to Kiambu County, where they were allegedly kept inside an empty room for several days. Detectives said the circumstances indicated that the children were being deliberately isolated from relatives and other people who might have raised an alarm.
Authorities have also alleged that one of the minors was sexually assaulted while in captivity. Because the case involves children, investigators have not publicly disclosed details that could identify the victims or expose them to further harm.
The children were eventually released, but investigators said they were allegedly threatened with death if they revealed what had happened to them. Their release subsequently provided detectives with information that helped advance the investigation and trace the suspected abductor.
The arrest represents an important breakthrough for investigators, but the case remains active. Police are continuing efforts to establish the complete sequence of events and locate the alleged accomplice who remains at large.
The arrested suspect is expected to appear before a court on September 7. Authorities said he is expected to face serious charges connected with alleged defilement, kidnapping and child trafficking. The final charges and their outcome will be determined through the judicial process.
The investigation also highlights the difficulties authorities face when missing children are moved across county boundaries. In this case, the alleged movement from Mombasa to Kiambu required investigators to follow leads beyond the location where the children were originally reported missing.
Kenyan authorities have repeatedly urged members of the public to report suspected cases involving child abduction, trafficking or exploitation as quickly as possible. Early reporting can give investigators more opportunities to trace movements, identify suspects and locate missing children before they are moved farther away.
Detectives are now working to identify and arrest the second person allegedly involved in the incident. Investigators are also expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the children’s confinement and determine whether anyone else assisted in the alleged offence.
The suspect remains legally presumed innocent unless and until a court establishes his guilt. The allegations against him will therefore be tested through the judicial process.
For the two rescued children, authorities’ immediate priority is expected to remain their safety and protection while investigators continue gathering evidence. The case is also likely to draw renewed attention to the need for rapid responses to reports involving missing and vulnerable children.
