Ukraine and Sweden Deepen Defense Partnership as Leaders Discuss Air Defense and Military Cooperation
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that he held a conversation with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, focusing on strengthening defense cooperation and addressing Ukraine’s evolving security needs amid the ongoing war with Russia.
According to President Zelenskyy, he thanked the Swedish leader for Sweden’s continued political and military support, as well as for maintaining a firm stance regarding Russia’s military actions against Ukraine. The discussion centered on practical measures to reinforce Ukraine’s defense capabilities as the conflict continues to present new operational challenges.
A major topic of the conversation was air defense. Zelenskyy stated that Russia has increasingly relied on combined aerial attacks involving ballistic missiles alongside jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles. Such attacks are designed to place sustained pressure on Ukraine’s air defense network while targeting critical infrastructure and civilian areas. Strengthening defensive systems, he said, remains essential to limiting the effectiveness of these operations.
The two leaders also reviewed ongoing cooperation involving Sweden’s JAS 39 Gripen fighter aircraft. Zelenskyy said both countries are actively working on the necessary infrastructure, pilot training, technical preparation, and operational planning required for the future deployment of the aircraft. If implemented, the initiative would represent a significant expansion of bilateral defense cooperation and a major step in modernizing Ukraine’s combat aviation capabilities.
Beyond military aviation, Ukraine and Sweden are also advancing collaboration in unmanned systems through the Ukraine–Sweden Drone Deal framework. Drone technology has become an increasingly important element of modern warfare, supporting reconnaissance, surveillance, logistics, and precision strike capabilities. Joint development and cooperation in this field are expected to strengthen both countries’ defense industries and technological expertise.
The leaders also discussed future diplomatic engagement and agreed to maintain close communication as defense cooperation progresses. Continued coordination is expected to help ensure that planned initiatives move forward efficiently while addressing Ukraine’s immediate security requirements.
Sweden has emerged as one of Ukraine’s key European partners since Russia’s full-scale invasion, providing military assistance, humanitarian aid, financial support, and political backing. The expanding partnership reflects broader European efforts to enhance Ukraine’s defensive capabilities while supporting its long-term security and resilience.
As the conflict continues to evolve, Ukraine’s cooperation with international partners remains focused on improving air defense, strengthening military readiness, and expanding defense-industrial collaboration.
