UNCTAD to Bring Global Investment Leaders Together in Doha for World Investment Forum 2026

Geneva, The global investment community is set to converge in Doha, Qatar, in October as UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) prepares to host the ninth edition of its World Investment Forum.
The three-day event will take place from October 25 to 27, 2026, under the theme “Investing in the Future.” The forum is being organized in partnership with the State of Qatar and is expected to bring together policymakers, investors, business leaders, financial institutions and other major players involved in international investment.
Investment at a Time of Global Uncertainty
UNCTAD is organizing the forum as international investment patterns face major changes.
Geopolitical tensions, economic fragmentation and rapid technological developments are influencing where companies invest, how capital moves across borders and how international supply chains are structured.
Against this backdrop, the forum will examine how investment can contribute to sustainable development, economic resilience and long-term growth.
Rather than focusing only on short-term capital movements, discussions are expected to explore ways to direct investment toward productive capacity and development opportunities in a changing global economy.
Artificial Intelligence Among Major Topics
Artificial intelligence will feature prominently in the 2026 programme.
The forum will examine investment opportunities associated with AI and the broader digital economy, including questions surrounding infrastructure, technology adoption and the ability of developing economies to participate in the next phase of technological growth.
Other major subjects will include critical minerals, energy, infrastructure and sustainable finance.
The programme will also explore investment opportunities connected with tourism, culture and the emerging space economy.
Government and Private Sector to Share the Platform
The World Investment Forum is designed to connect people who create investment policies with those responsible for allocating capital.
Senior government officials, investment authorities, multinational companies, financial institutions, entrepreneurs and investors are expected to participate.
The programme will include Global Leaders Plenaries, ministerial roundtables, the Sustainable Stock Exchanges Dialogue, a high-level discussion on Gulf investment and a global investment-promotion conference.
These sessions are intended to encourage dialogue while also creating opportunities for partnerships and investment activity.
Global Investment Is Recovering, but Unevenly
The upcoming forum also comes as global foreign direct investment shows signs of recovery.
According to UNCTAD’s World Investment Report 2026, worldwide FDI increased 6% to $1.6 trillion in 2025, ending two consecutive years of decline.
However, the recovery has not been evenly distributed.
Investment in developed economies increased by 11%, while flows to developing economies grew by only 2%. More than 80% of global FDI went to the 20 largest host economies, highlighting the increasing concentration of international investment.
Strategic Sectors Attract Growing Investment
UNCTAD’s data also show that international investment is becoming increasingly concentrated in a relatively small group of strategic industries.
Strategic sectors accounted for 44% of the value of global greenfield investment projects in 2025, compared with just 16% in 2020.
The trend reflects the growing importance of technology, energy transition, critical resources and other sectors that governments and companies consider strategically important.
These developments are expected to be an important part of discussions in Doha as policymakers consider how investment can reach a wider range of economies.
Qatar to Host the Global Investment Gathering
For Qatar, hosting the ninth World Investment Forum provides an opportunity to highlight Doha’s growing role in international investment and finance.
The event will bring global investment discussions to the Gulf at a time when the region is attracting increasing attention from international investors.
The forum’s location also places regional investment issues alongside broader global debates over technology, infrastructure, sustainable finance and economic resilience.
Registration Is Open
UNCTAD has confirmed that registration for the World Investment Forum 2026 is open, with the complete programme available through the forum’s official website.
As the October meeting approaches, the event is expected to become an important platform for governments, financial institutions and investors seeking to understand where global capital is heading and how investment can contribute to sustainable development.
The Doha forum will ultimately focus on a central question: how can investment be directed toward economies and sectors that need capital while also creating long-term resilience in an increasingly uncertain global environment?
