Water Resources Department Steps Up Night Vigil as Deep Depression Triggers Rainfall Across Odisha
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Water Resources Department has stepped up round-the-clock monitoring of rivers and key water infrastructure as a deep depression over the region brings widespread rainfall and the possibility of rising water levels.
Engineering officials and field personnel have been deployed for night patrols at vulnerable and strategically important locations. The exercise is focused on keeping a continuous watch over reservoirs, barrages, sluices, riverbanks and other flood-control infrastructure.
In the Sorada area, the Assistant Engineer of Sorada Section-I, accompanied by field personnel, carried out an overnight inspection of critical locations. During the operation, officials managed the gates of the Padma Barrage associated with the Sorada Reservoir to regulate incoming water and divert flows towards the reservoir according to the prevailing conditions.
Officials of the Gunupur Irrigation Sub-Division also conducted night inspections at several points along the Vansadhara River. Their patrol covered areas around Sananadi Bridge, the Central Water Commission gauge station, Haldia Sluice and Ktwalguda village.
The monitoring activities around the Haldia Sluice were also continued to keep track of river conditions and ensure that the associated structures remained under close observation.
Meanwhile, field personnel carried out night patrols along the Left Flood Bank of the Rushikulya River. The surveillance was aimed at monitoring the river and checking the condition of flood-protection infrastructure during the period of heightened rainfall activity.
The department’s field teams are maintaining continuous communication and surveillance as weather conditions evolve. Regular monitoring of river levels and water infrastructure is particularly important during periods of intense rainfall, when water flows can change rapidly.
The intensified night patrols are part of the department’s wider preparedness measures to identify potential risks at an early stage and facilitate timely action where required.
With rainfall continuing under the influence of the deep depression, officials remain on alert at important water-resource locations across Odisha. The department is maintaining 24×7 vigilance to monitor developments and support the safe management of water flows.
