Washington: The White House has restored access for journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico after a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to temporarily halt its ban on the three news organizations.

The dispute followed the administration’s decision to revoke the outlets’ White House access, prompting the organizations to challenge the move in federal court.

US District Judge Tim Kelly ordered the administration to stop enforcing the ban for 14 days while the legal case proceeds. The judge found that the removal of the journalists’ credentials likely violated their constitutional due-process rights.

The White House initially faced further legal pressure after journalists from the three organizations reported that they were still being prevented from entering the White House grounds even after the court order.

The news organizations subsequently asked the judge for an emergency hearing, arguing that the administration had not fully complied with the ruling.

White House officials said they had begun the process of restoring the affected journalists’ credentials. According to a court filing, the White House press operation began the reinstatement process early in the morning and made the press badges available at an entry point later that morning.

The dispute has become a significant confrontation between the Trump administration and several major American news organizations.

Trump had previously criticized the three outlets and accused them of publishing what he characterized as false or inaccurate coverage. His administration also argued in court that restrictions on access were connected to concerns about national security and the handling of sensitive information.

The three media organizations rejected those arguments and said the administration’s actions violated constitutional protections involving freedom of the press and due process.

Judge Kelly questioned the administration’s national-security justification in his ruling, saying the available record did not establish that restoring the journalists’ access would create the security risks claimed by the government.

The case has attracted particular attention because White House press access is an important part of the US political system. Reporters covering the president routinely work through shared press arrangements that allow television networks and other media organizations to distribute coverage of presidential activities.

CNN is part of the primary television press pool, alongside ABC, CBS, Fox News and NBC. The organizations share coverage responsibilities and distribute footage to other outlets.

The dispute temporarily disrupted that arrangement. Other members of the television pool had suspended some coverage in solidarity with CNN while the access dispute was being litigated.

The confrontation also occurred during an important diplomatic period for the White House, as President Donald Trump was hosting Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington while also participating in United Nations General Assembly events in New York.

The absence of normal television pool coverage during Xi’s arrival at the White House highlighted the practical consequences of the dispute.

The court’s latest intervention does not permanently resolve the case. The 14-day order is an interim measure while the broader legal challenge continues.

The dispute could therefore remain an important test of the relationship between presidential authority, White House press access and constitutional protections for journalists.

Further court proceedings are expected to determine whether the administration can legally maintain restrictions on the three organizations beyond the temporary period covered by the judge’s order.
