Kyiv, Ukraine: A Russian drone strike hit the Stolychnyi market in Sofiivska Borshchahivka, on the western outskirts of Kyiv, on September 27, killing two people and injuring several others, according to Ukrainian officials. A fire broke out at the market following the strike.

The attack occurred during a wider wave of Russian drone and missile strikes against Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities reported that emergency crews were sent to the market to deal with the fire and the aftermath of the attack.

Market Area Hit by Drone

The Kyiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office said a strike drone hit the market grounds in Sofiivska Borshchahivka, located in Bucha district of Kyiv region. Initial casualty figures changed as authorities continued assessing the scene, but later reports put the death toll at two, with reports of roughly 10 people injured.

Images from the scene showed burning vehicles and significant damage around the market area.

Wider Attacks Across Kyiv

The market strike was part of a broader series of attacks affecting Kyiv and surrounding areas.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said several people were injured in attacks across the capital, including a child. Buildings in several districts were damaged, while fires and falling drone debris were reported at different locations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia had launched 277 attack drones of different types since Saturday, including 155 jet-powered drones, according to Reuters reporting.

Civilian Areas Affected

Ukrainian authorities also reported damage to residential and other civilian infrastructure during the attacks. A high-rise building in Kyiv was hit and caught fire, while other areas experienced falling debris.

Russia has repeatedly denied intentionally targeting civilians during the war and says its strikes are directed at military or strategically important infrastructure.

Investigation Continues

Ukrainian emergency services and law-enforcement agencies continued working at the market following the strike. Authorities were assessing the extent of the damage and documenting the consequences.

The incident highlights the continuing danger faced by civilians in and around Kyiv as aerial attacks remain frequent.
