Saudi Arabia: Riyadh Seeks U.S. Support as Houthi Threat to Red Sea Shipping Escalates
Saudi Arabia is seeking stronger U.S. support as fighting with Iran-aligned Houthi forces in Yemen intensifies and concerns grow over the security of the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab, one of the world’s most important maritime routes.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman reportedly spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump twice on Thursday and urged Washington to take military action against the Houthis after the group seized the strategic Yemeni port city of Mocha. The development has raised concerns over threats to international shipping and Saudi energy exports.
The escalation has already affected global energy markets. Oil prices remain above $100 a barrel, with Brent crude around $105–106 and both major benchmarks heading toward their strongest weekly gain in months. Analysts say continued disruption around the Red Sea and Strait of Hormuz could create further pressure on global fuel supplies.
Saudi Arabia has faced several recent Houthi attacks, including incidents that triggered security alerts in southern parts of the kingdom. Riyadh has accused the Iran-backed group of targeting infrastructure, while the Houthis have said their attacks are connected to the wider regional conflict.
The situation is particularly significant for global trade because the Bab al-Mandab Strait connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and is a major route for commercial vessels travelling between Europe and Asia.
Washington has increased its support for Saudi Arabia but remains cautious about becoming directly involved in the wider Yemen conflict. The United States has indicated that maintaining the openness of the Red Sea is a key priority.
With tensions continuing across the Middle East, developments around Yemen could have consequences far beyond the region, particularly for oil prices, shipping costs, global inflation and international supply chains.
