Belgrade: Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić resigned on September ending his second presidential term early and preparing to participate in Serbia’s upcoming snap parliamentary election as a candidate for prime minister. Serbia’s government also confirmed his resignation.

Vučić’s resignation comes ahead of the October 25 parliamentary election. Under Serbia’s Constitution, he cannot seek a third presidential term, and his resignation opens the way for a separate early presidential election.

Ana Brnabić to Serve as Acting President

Following Vučić’s resignation, National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabić is set to become acting president. A presidential election must be held within the constitutionally specified period, with Serbia expected to hold the vote by the end of December.

Vučić Plans to Run for Prime Minister

Vučić is leaving the presidency to campaign for his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in the October parliamentary election. If the party forms the next government, he could become prime minister.

The move follows nearly two years of student-led protests in Serbia. The demonstrations began after the November 2024 railway-station canopy collapse in Novi Sad, which killed 16 people and subsequently became a major focus of demands for accountability and political change.

Political Transition Underway

Vučić formally submitted his resignation at the Presidency in Belgrade and said he would transfer his duties to Brnabić. The upcoming parliamentary election will determine the composition of Serbia’s next government, while a separate presidential contest will follow.
