Chinese Singing Competition in Mozambique Promotes Language Learning and Cultural Exchange
A new cultural initiative in Mozambique is bringing young people closer to Chinese language and traditions through music, as students participated in the first-ever “MozDream” Chinese Singing Competition in the country’s capital, Maputo.

The event brought together local students learning Mandarin Chinese, giving them an opportunity to demonstrate their language abilities through singing while exploring Chinese culture in a creative and entertaining environment.
Organised by the Confucius Institute at Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM), the competition represents another step towards strengthening educational and cultural connections between China and Mozambique.
Music Creates a New Way to Learn Chinese
The MozDream competition was designed to make Chinese language learning more engaging by combining education with musical performance.
Participants demonstrated their Mandarin skills through Chinese songs, allowing them to practise pronunciation, improve their language abilities and develop a deeper understanding of Chinese cultural traditions.
Chinese Ambassador to Mozambique Zheng Xuan praised the initiative and highlighted the importance of students in strengthening relations between the two countries.
He noted that the Confucius Institute at Eduardo Mondlane University has helped thousands of students experience the Chinese language through educational and cultural activities since its establishment in 2012.
University Highlights the Importance of Cultural Exchange
Amalia Alexandre Uamusse, vice rector of Eduardo Mondlane University, described the competition as an initiative with considerable educational and cultural value.
She highlighted how music can transform language learning into a practical and enjoyable experience.
According to her, the competition demonstrated students’ enthusiasm for learning Chinese and their interest in exploring a culture that is becoming increasingly connected with Mozambican society.
The event also provided an opportunity for students to express themselves creatively while building confidence in their language abilities.
Joao Julio Manecas Wins the Competition
One of the highlights of the event was the performance of Joao Julio Manecas, who secured first place in the competition.
Manecas explained that his Chinese teacher had recommended the song he performed.
He spent considerable time studying the original singer’s performance before developing his own interpretation and adding creative elements.
His achievement demonstrated how language education can extend beyond traditional classroom lessons and become a platform for artistic expression.
Following his victory, Manecas expressed his determination to improve his Mandarin skills further and explore professional opportunities connected with the language.
He also encouraged other young people to learn Chinese, describing it as an interesting language that can broaden people’s knowledge and perspectives.
China and Mozambique Strengthen Educational Connections
The competition reflects the growing importance of educational and cultural cooperation between China and Mozambique.
Language programmes, university partnerships and cultural activities provide opportunities for students to understand different societies and develop international connections.
Learning Mandarin can also create opportunities in education, business, tourism and international cooperation.
For Mozambique’s younger generation, acquiring additional language skills may help open doors to academic exchanges and future professional opportunities.
Conclusion
The first MozDream Chinese Singing Competition demonstrates how music and education can work together to promote international understanding.
By encouraging students to learn Mandarin through creative performances, the initiative has created a welcoming platform for cultural exchange between China and Mozambique.
The event also highlights the important role universities and language institutions can play in building connections between different communities.
As interest in international education continues to grow, initiatives like MozDream could help inspire more young people to explore foreign languages, discover new cultures and develop a broader global perspective.
